Depressed preschoolers show elevated amygdala activity

There’s a difference between a preschooler who is sad for a day because he lost his favorite toy and one who has depression. In the latter, brain scans reveal elevated activity in the amygdala, a set of neurons that deal with processing emotions. The good news is, early interventions can help prevent problems later.
