A new study confirms what previous research has discovered: that P. gingivalis, the bacteria commonly found in people with periodontitis, boosts the production of beta-amyloid in the brain. In particular, the study found that for older men, the risk of cognitive decline increases as more teeth are lost due to periodontal disease and caries (the decay and crumbling of teeth or bone).
